Oliver James CHENERY, son of Stephen CHENERY (c. 1858- ) and Matilda GARNHAM (c. 1861-c. 1939), was born circa 1900 in South Lopham, Norfolk. Oliver is known to have enlisted at Ipswich and first served with 13/81540, 53rd T.R. Battalion, but ending in the 1st Battalion Rifle Brigade (The Prince Consort’s Own), Rifleman, serv. no. 49380. Oliver died on 1 November 1918 in France - killed in action. He is buried/commemorated at Preseau Communal Cemetery Extension - C. 2. Personal inscription: PEACE PERFECT PEACE WITH LOVED ONES FAR AWAY. The Commonwealth War Graves Commission grave registration entry for Oliver was “CHENERY, Rfn. Oliver James, 49380. 1st Bn. The Rifle brigade. 1st Nov., 1918. Age 18. Son of Charles Stephen and Matilda Chenery, of The Street, Rickinghall, Diss.” Oliver is commorated on the Rickinghall Inferior, Suffolk War Memorial.
